Chicken Shawarma with Tzatziki Sauce
This is a refreshing recipe, that is very light and very healthy. The mix of flavors works harmoniously together. I used pita bread to make the pockets, instead of Arabic bread.
This recipe yields 2 sandwhiches.
Ingredients:
2 chicken breast fillet
1/2 teaspoon of cumin powder
1/2 teaspoon of dry coriander
1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon of red Spanish paprika powder
1/2 teaspoon of turmeric
1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon powder
1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
1/2 tablespoon of salt
1 cup of greek natural yogurt
1 garlic clove (mashed)
1 tablespoon of dry oregano
1 medium seedless/skin in cucumber (grated)
2 radishes (thinly sliced)
2 tomatoes (sliced)
2 small pita bread (warmed up and halved)
2 tablespoon of parsley (chopped for garnish)
vegetable oil for cooking
Directions:
1. In a bowl mix together all the spices including the salt and except the oregano.
2. Freeze the chicken breast half way through so it is easy to make thin slices. Then add 3 tablespoons of the spice mixture and let marinate at least 30 minutes.
3. In a skillet, warm up the oil and add the chicken to cook throughly. Once is done keep warm.
4. In a bowl mix the: yogurt, garlic, oregano and cucumber, keep refrigerated.
5. Assembling: spread a spoon of the tzatziki into each half of the bread, add the chicken and garnish with more sauce, tomatoes, radishes and parsley.
Tips:
1. Traditionally, pickles and sesame sauce (tarator sauce) is use for this dish. Tarator is a simple sauce made with Tahini paste, lemon, garlic and pit of water all blended together.
Enjoy!
